Careers in Industry and National Labs [article image]

When: Fri, Sep 24 2021 10:00am

Where: CHTM 103

Please join us on Friday September 24th from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM for a seminar featuring Tory Carr, PhD from Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Abstract:

In my talk, I will discuss my career trajectory from physics grad school to industrial material characterization with IBM Research to my current position at Los Alamos National Laboratory. I will present a “how-to” guide with helpful tips for applying to industrial and national lab positions, lessons learned, and specific challenges Ive found within each research environment. This includes navigating the “two-body problem” that often exists in our field of two technical professionals trying to find jobs on the same side of the country.

Bio: Tory received her PhD in Physics from JILA/ CU Boulder in 2015 doing studies of time-resolved photoemission on solid state systems. After doing an internship at the IBM TJ Watson Research Center at the end of her PhD, she joined IBM Research-Albany, doing materials development for the metal interconnects used in next-generation computer chips. She transitioned to Los Alamos National laboratory in 2019 studying advanced material characterization techniques.
